But scientific understanding of climate change has been advancing so rapidly that doubters now have much more scientific ammunition against which they can argue – making the battle between them both more heated. “Climate change is scientific reality,” said Richard Somerville , professor emeritus of Earth system science at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at University of California, San Diego. “But the degree to which that science will persuade skeptics is questionable.” He says that although mainstream scientists and journalists have long cited studies showing that Earth’s surface temperature has warmed by about 0.8 degrees Celsius (1.4 degrees Fahrenheit) since the late 19th century, some skeptics take issue with how those studies work. A study published on Wednesday says that Earth’s surface, including oceans, warmed about two degrees over that period. That means that “the scientific reality of climate change has moved farther from the scientific skeptics,” Professor Somerville said. Earther reported on Wednesday that scientists recently came up with “the most exact estimate yet” of temperature change surrounding humans. Using historical measurements from ships’ logs dating from as early as the seventeenth century, researchers have added yet another number to an existing sum of temperature change due to humans – roughly half a degree Celsius (0.9 F).
